Fence sitters follow the path of least offense

You just gotta admire people who when faced with a challenge to speak their mind do so first thing without reservation. The mark of a fence sitter is one of a habitual inclination to wait and observe while the more courageous of the lot speak out. Perhaps they do so to take stock of the landscape of opinion and then find the path of least offense over which they then tread.

The oh-so-noble journalists are at it again, this time, with Duterte’s Hitler comment. I am no Duterte fanatic. I criticize him more scathingly than anyone when his mouth is out of line. But this time, Duterte really didn’t say anything wrong. The real culprits behind the fuss over his Hitler comment are Karen Lema and Manuel Mogato, two Filipino reporters of the Reuters news agency, who wrote this article: “ Philippines’ Duterte likens himself to Hitler, wants to kill millions of drug addicts ”. Lema and Mogato are Filipinos. There’s no way they could have misunderstood what Duterte really meant in his speech. I watched the video and this is what the President said: “Hitler massacred 3 million Jews. There are 3 million drug addicts. I’d be happy to slaughter them. At least, if Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have ….. my victims, all criminals, to finish a problem of my country, and save the next generation.” (See for yourself here . If anti-Duterte critics could come up with better solutions to the drug proliferation problem, they would have already prevented it from worsening during BS AbNoy’s (and De Lima’s) time. But, they fail to convincingly demonstrate either the aptitude or, at least, genuine inclination to really solve the drug problem. Instead, they’ve been strangely silent and seemingly oblivious to its urgency and magnitude. Neither have I seen nor heard from them any equal (if not greater) concern for the rights of victims harmed by these drug criminals——and this is why their real intent remains suspect——It got blatantly obvious that their concern for the so-called “rights” of drug criminals (which they’ve forfeited) supersede the rights of victims. Filipinos cannot build a strong nation because they are incapable of cooperating with one another

Filipinos are renowned for being utterly unable to co-operate. Even within families they cheat and abuse each other. Nobody trusts anybody else for a very good reason: most Filipinos are untrustworthy. They’ll stab you in the back if they think there’s some short-term gain in it. This is a hole that’s very hard to dig yourself out of. Nobody can offer to help his neighbor, or his neighborhood, or his country, because he knows that sooner or later one of two things will happen: he’ll be slapped down for failing to conform to social expectations, or he’ll be ripped off so often that he’ll just give up. So exactly how do you suppose a strong, independent nation is going to be built upon that? It’s impossible. Strong societies are strong because they learn to co-operate among themselves.
