The true "state of the nation" of the Philippines lies in the character of its people

Filipinos beholdenness to their Constitution and the amount of chatter a proposal to change it is generating speaks volumes about the inherent nature of their society -- one that routinely externalises the causes of their issues and, as a result, habitually seeks external and even divine intervention in the implementation of solutions to these.

The Constitution may be the guiding document of how a society is governed. But, ultimately, responsibility for personal prosperity rests in the individual. This individual ethic to take initiative and progress one's lot is the backbone of a society's collective character.

When Filipinos see their fortunes disproportionately tied to an abstract piece of paper they are told is their "Constitution", it is evidence of a lack of an essential aspect of personal character of the sort that makes a great people.

The oh-so-noble journalists are at it again, this time, with Duterte’s Hitler comment. I am no Duterte fanatic. I criticize him more scathingly than anyone when his mouth is out of line. But this time, Duterte really didn’t say anything wrong. The real culprits behind the fuss over his Hitler comment are Karen Lema and Manuel Mogato, two Filipino reporters of the Reuters news agency, who wrote this article: “ Philippines’ Duterte likens himself to Hitler, wants to kill millions of drug addicts ”. Lema and Mogato are Filipinos. There’s no way they could have misunderstood what Duterte really meant in his speech. I watched the video and this is what the President said: “Hitler massacred 3 million Jews. There are 3 million drug addicts. I’d be happy to slaughter them. At least, if Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have ….. my victims, all criminals, to finish a problem of my country, and save the next generation.” (See for yourself here . I have even forgiven one who libeled me and we are in fact friends now. But when you attack my family, you have done Mrs. Robredo a disservice and I am going to make sure you are going to pay the price. More juicy hearsay stories about the Barretto sisters!

Following the whole brouhaha at the NAIA Terminal 3 involving Claudine Barretto, Raymart Santiago, and Ramon Tulfo, some more factoids surrounding the characters in this spectacle have been re-emerging. Apparently there are a lot of anecdotes about the appalling behaviour of the Barretto sisters. Here are some of the jucier allegations . Claudine, was once waiting for a domestic flight holding a Philippine Airlines economy ticket. She asked one of the ground crew to be allow her to sit in the business class lounge while waiting for the flight. She was denied, of course, but then she was said to have said something to the effect of “what, you mean you expect me to sit and wait with them” while pointing to the people sitting in the economy lounge. Then there was the story about how Claudine's elder sister Gretchen who works out at Fitness First in RCBC Yuchengco Building was in the elevator when another lady stepped in.
