After watching this latest ad from Dove, think about how a typical Filipino/Filipina views himself/herself versus how others perceive him/her to be.  Think as well about the importance that Filipino society places on others' perception of an individual against the individual's perception of himself/herself.

You may or may not be surprised about what comes out, but it should make you think.

Posted by a certain Chloe Santiago on the Facebook GRP Community Group : Jose Rizal died in 1896 and Tagalog was declared the official language of the Philippine only in 1937. This can only mean that Rizal wasn't really talking about Tagalog when he made this statement: "He who does not love his own language is worse than an animal and smelly fish." Indeed. Who made the arbitrary directive to make the Tagalog dialect the "National Language" to begin with? Furthermore, why have a "National Language" when Filipinos are already proficient in the global lingua franca of commerce and scientific achievement?

Poor people in the Philippines seem to prefer poverty over aspiring to be not poor

Sadly, a MAJORITY of the poor people here are bad people. That is WHY they are poor. They disrespect others, they disrespect themselves, and they disrespect God’s creation. Exactly how do they think they’ll be rewarded for that? If you genuinely had empathy, you would be able to get inside their heads and understand why they do these things, and perhaps know how to fix it. However, you are confusing “empathy” with “sympathy”. I have yet to meet a poor person who actually WANTS to do the things necessary to escape poverty. The funny thing is, everyone can see that I’m more successful than they are. They think this is because I’m “rich”. I’m sure a lot of them are full of jealousy (as benign0 describes) and sit around thinking “ha, it’s not fair, that foreigner is so rich and I’m so poor. I guess it’s OK if I steal his stuff”. Outrage over Leni Robredo's fraudulent Vice Presidency prevails among ordinary Filipinos!

To those who say Leni Robredo is the legally recognized VP, please think about this — legally recognized by whom? By the yellow officials who installed her through illicit means? By the dwindling band of yellow fanatics who turned up at Luneta last weekend? Go out to the streets. Talk to the jeepney drivers, taxi drivers, vendors, commuters, etc. Talk to the real people expressing their disgust and disbelief in forums, facebook, etc. The outrage is everywhere, expressed several times a day, everyday, in the Philippines and among the OFWs. Robredo can be sworn in a thousand times by Drilon and Belmonte, declared "winner" a million times by Andres Bautista, "legalized" a billion times by Sereno, and congratulated a trillion times by the US and other ambassadors, but majority of the Filipino people STILL won't believe she's legit. Also, think about this: had Escudero or Cayetano been declared winner for VP, do you think there would be this kind of outrage? No...

Filipinos are their worst enemy and their politics more important than country

Hopefully there can be progress in the Philippines – but not without a systemic change in values from the top down. The Philippines ought to be able to improve – but this is contingent upon good policies, honesty, ending corruption and laws be followed. I am doubtful Duterte can change things; further, what will happen next election? If he can make significant changes( infrastructure, proper funding of departments, end corruption) then the country may move toward a better direction. Referring to previous comments regarding foreign typhoon aid, other countries will donate and the money will be stolen as usual. I remember the comments from Roxas to Romualdez in Tacloban, after Yolanda . The politicians have hatred for each other. I remember politicians repackaging aid goods from foreign countries and putting their name and picture on it. Sometimes ‘aid’ comes as a quasi bribe, in my opinion.
