Amy Winehouse: end of the line for a slow unfolding train wreck

I'm not a fan of Amy Winehouse nor can I say that I would know a song of hers if I heard it. But I know her just the same because she is a fixture on newspaper headlines and magazine covers. A senseless but perhaps not surprising passing of what it seems from what I've read in those papers and magazines, to be a great artist. With great artistry comes great angst, and much  therapy.

The oh-so-noble journalists are at it again, this time, with Duterte’s Hitler comment. I am no Duterte fanatic. I criticize him more scathingly than anyone when his mouth is out of line. But this time, Duterte really didn’t say anything wrong. The real culprits behind the fuss over his Hitler comment are Karen Lema and Manuel Mogato, two Filipino reporters of the Reuters news agency, who wrote this article: “ Philippines’ Duterte likens himself to Hitler, wants to kill millions of drug addicts ”. Lema and Mogato are Filipinos. There’s no way they could have misunderstood what Duterte really meant in his speech. I watched the video and this is what the President said: “Hitler massacred 3 million Jews. There are 3 million drug addicts. I’d be happy to slaughter them. At least, if Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have ….. my victims, all criminals, to finish a problem of my country, and save the next generation.” (See for yourself here . Julia Abad, chief of the Presidential Management Staff, and daughter of Budget Secretary Butch Abad recently posted on her Facebook page a statement in defence of her father. She writes that the public should not let allegations made by Janet Lim-Napoles "shake our belief that a reformist public service is possible." She goes on to state "I am Julia Abad, government employee, wife and mother. And I am proud to tell you, Butch Abad is my father." On the one hand, this sounds like a testament to the Abad family's commitment to a tradition of public service. WTF?! Sereno, who is NOT a Catholic, attends Catholic mass hosted by the Ateneo!

The lengths never-had-been-chief-justice Lourdes Sereno would go to score PR points knows no bounds. She now attends Catholic masses even if she herself is not a Roman Catholic. CNN Philippines , for example, reported how "Former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno clad in black attends solidarity mass in Ateneo. Supporters pray over her". Yet, even Yellowtard newsletter Rappler reports that "Sereno, 57, is a Born Again Christian." The question therefore is, what do the "born again" faithful make of the idea of a member of their flock attending a Catholic mass? Indeed, the bigger picture here is whether it is even right to be making participation in religious rituals a part of one's public relations (PR) campaign to begin with.
